The Willys company was contracted to build military jeeps for the third world war. Approximately 360,000 vehicles were produced by 1945. The CJ model, which stands for Civilian Jeep, did not have civilian appeal as it was still very much a utility vehicle. After the war, the Willys-Overland company began to resume civilian models. To get more curb appeal, the Jeepster was introduced. In 1948, VJ-12 was introduced. There were only 10,326 of the 1948 Jeepsters produced. Unfortunately, the companys sales slumped, and many 1948 models were retitled as 1949 Jeepsters. The Jeepster was never popular with the American public, and from 1948-1950, only 19,000 were produced. Many civilians were reminded of wartime and did not want to drive a vehicle that was reminiscent of the war. In 1949, only 2,960 Jeepsters were built and of these, only 635 models had a 6-cylinder engine. Fast forward to today, and you see that this 1949 Willys Overland Jeepster is a rare vehicle. And it is fun!
With its box-styling, this Jeepster is a good-looking ride. The body is in good shape but will need some TLC. The original paint color was red. There is no visible rust, and the underneath looks to have no rust through. The grille has some oxidized places, but you dont notice from 15-20 feet away. The front and rear bumpers are good, up close you see some haziness on the top portion of the rear bumper. The spare tire mount has some surface rust on the wheel cover.
Interior is the black and the seat cover is in very good condition. The black dash has a clock and instrument panel. Door panels are black. The steering wheel is wrapped and it does have a couple of cracks.
Under the hood is the L-head 6-cylinder in-line engine on a cast iron block. The 4-cylinder was standard. Transmission is a 3-speed manual.
This Jeepster had no problem starting up and it ran great. It is a great, fun vehicle that will get lots of attention and even some offers to buy! This is a great one to restore to perfection or to a show driver condition.
