Presenting a late production 1967 Corvette 427 4-spd Convertible that was painstakingly converted from standard 427 spec to L88 spec. Overall, the car is very correct with it's true to original Marine Blue Metallic paint, Bright Blue Vinyl interior, '67 specific Rally Wheels, Side Exhaust, 3-spoke wood rimmed steering wheel, Black Vinyl Hard Top, and black hood stinger with 427 badging.

Built at the St. Louis Plant on April 28, 1967, it is the 7,641st body of the '67 model year and among the final 18 of April '67 production. Both the original trim tag and serial number tag are present below the passenger dash and verify the trim to be correct as well as both the body build number and location.

The full restoration was performed under previous ownership with great lengths taken to accurately convert the car to L88 spec. During the project, the car received a replacement powertrain including: L88 crate engine (date coded 3/31/67), off-the-shelf replacement Muncie M22 4-spd heavy duty gearbox, and G80 Posi-traction Rear Axle Assembly (stampings and part numbers can be seen in the gallery). Additional modifications include J56 heavy-duty brake calipers and J50 power ventilated disc brakes, F41 Performance Suspension, K66 transistorized ignition, as well as L88 specific radio and HVAC delete dash. The L88 Holley 850cfm carburetor has been removed in favor of a more street-able modern 850cfm Holley with electronic choke, however the original unit has been retained and can be seen in the gallery.

Important to bear in mind, the 427-430 powerplant is a 12.5:1 compression ratio beast that does need 103+ octane to operate safely. While it was rated at 430bhp from the factory, the rating was a tongue-in-cheek answer to GM's desire to only sell the L88 to those in-the-know, or more appropriately in the racing community. The engine was quite expensive for it's time, and it was well known that the actual power output well exceeded the factory rating and actually varied between 550-600bhp. The strategy worked in that only 20 actual L88 Corvette's left the factory in 1967, however the motor could also be bought over-the-counter in crate form for motorsport enthusiasts which is how this specific motor and car were wed.

Overall driveability is excellent as the car is very well sorted in general. The 427-430 V8 idles at approximately 750rpm with no surging or idle hunt and the cadence of the firing indicates the presence of the appropriate cam profile and top-end components. The power delivers smoothly and violently (as it should), and the engine is free of smoke at both cold and warm startup as well as under acceleration. The gearbox and clutch both engage and shift properly, the posi-traction rear end is quiet, and as a whole the drivetrain is tight and free of slop.

As true with the original L88 Stingrays, this example is sans A/C, power steering, PVC system, radio, power windows, etc.

We know the vehicle has been a California native since the restoration was initiated in the early 2000's, therefore the undercarriage, casings, suspension components, rubber grommets, joints, etc. exhibit no sign of weather exposure, large temperature fluctuations, salt, silt or moist climate exposure. The fiberglass body, shows extremely well without sign of collision repair or degradation and the Marine Blue Metallic Paint is mostly blemish free. All chrome is still bright, and the exhaust tubing, finishers, and heatshields are free of discoloration or sign of wet weather driving. The only notable blemish is some chipping of the silver paint on the driver's front rally wheel (pictured in the gallery), although the chrome center cap and trim ring are free of imperfection.

All lighting and accessories are operational, and the power fold headlamps operate in-sync and on time. The gauges are all operational and accurate with the exception of the odometer that reads 41,742. True mileage is unknown. The BF Goodrich Silvertown Red Line tires are DOT Stamped: CYN4 C2F6052, and look to have been installed during the restoration. They still retain approximately 9/32nds of tread (and an amount of the factory fur), but have quite a bit of age to them. Replacement is recommended if the vehicle is to become a routine driver.

All-in-all, this lovely '67 Stingray is a very well executed and well sorted L88 reproduction. Unfortunately, the thought of owning and actually driving an authentic L88 Stingray is not the most ideal given their low production and collectability. This car affords the opportunity to own and drive mechanically the same vehicle without the worry, risk, or depreciation of an original. The level of detail and expense of the conversion speaks for itself. This is truly a remarkable example that can be had for not only a fraction of the cost of a true L88, but also for what could be considered a only a modest premium over a standard 427.
