Cauley Ferrari of Detroit is very proud to offer this low mileage and highly desirable 1990 Ferrari F40 finished in Rosso Corsa over Stoffa Vigogna covered Carbon Fiber seats. This F40 was first delivered to the Official Ferrari Dealer Radicci Automobil S.r.l., located in Bari Italy in June of 1990. Later that year this F40 was exported to Japan and the first official Japanese VIP client took ownership at that time. He maintained ownership of the car up until 2009 when it was sold to its second owner, Masayuki Ichikawa, also in Japan, in 2009. The car remained under Mr. Ichikawa's ownership until just recently when he sold it to an American Importer who in turn sold the car to us. It first landed in the U.S. at Ferrari of Newport Beach who handled the initial inspection as well as performed the major service and replacement of the fuel bladders before we took possession of it.
This pristine example retains all of its original paint and glass. The carbon weave from the F40s Carbon Fiber/Kevlar body shows prominently through the Rosso Corsa paint which is always a highly sought-after trait collectors look for in an F40. The interior is in outstanding condition as well. The dash, gauges, pedals, and steering wheel show very well and proof that the car was always stored in a climate-controlled condition throughout its lifetime. The Ferrari F40 was the successor to the 288 GTO and was built from 1987 to 1992 with only 1,315 being produced. At the time, Enzo Ferrari was closing in on 90 years of age and the company was gearing up for its 40th anniversary. Enzo wanted to create a statement car, a car that took racing car technology and put it into a road car. Thus, he commissioned the F40, the final car overseen personally by Enzo Ferrari himself. Today, the F40 still ranks high on many professional race car drivers' and journalists' minds as one of the best driver's cars ever. Many believe it is the greatest supercar of all time. Part of the passion for the F40 is the fact that it was essentially a race car for the road. It was built with only the most essential systems (no power assistance was offered for the brakes or the steering) and in many regards is a car with functional simplicity. The complete package combined stunning looks and incredible performance, which could very well be considered the essential ingredients for being a supercar. Driving an F40 requires a very strong left foot and a very careful right foot.
Incorporating advanced composite materials, the F40 was very light. It features extensive use of carbon fiber and Kevlar, which was the newest, lightest high-tech composite material available at the time. The Ferrari F40s body panels were a structural part of the chassis, and its tube frame foundation was constructed from Kevlar and aluminum honeycomb sections, just like racing cars at the time. The interior was equally functional, it had no carpet or radio, and visible glue marks are present in the cabin as well.
Ferrari used a 2.9 Liter DOHC V8 engine based on the power plant of the 288 GTO, the car that Ferrari had been developing to compete in Group B. The displacement was increased and boost pressure tweaked on the F40 and the result was an impressive 472 Horsepower and 426 ft-lbs of torque. This powerful engine is mated to a five-speed gearbox and that, along with a dry weight of 1,100 KG or approximately 2,425 pounds, helped accelerate the car from 0 to 62 in just 3.8 seconds and reach a top speed of 201 mph, making it the fastest production car in the world at the time of its release and the first road car to crack the 200mph mark.
The F40 generated a huge amount of publicity for Ferrari and became an icon of Italian performance. In many ways, it's impossible to overestimate the impact of Ferrari's F40 on the supercar scene in the '90s. It explored the limits of performance and what could be achieved. This ethos was extended and followed up by the F50, the Enzo, and most recently, the LaFerrari.
